How to conduct a content audit on your existing content.

I used to dread going up into the loft.

For one, it was dusty. You know, the ‘never been cleaned since the 1940s’ type of dusty.

There were boxes and boxes of stuff up there, and while I knew what some of them had in there, I didn’t have the first clue about others.

It was a disorganised mess, and it was all our own fault. We’d shove another box full of stuff up, and take down the ladder without a care in the world.

Businesses have been creating their own content for many years now… however as one CMO leaves and another takes over, one strategy is implemented as another is left discarded in the top drawer, the content section of the website is an unstructured mess, where nothing’s too easy to find.

Just like our loft.

Unlike our loft, however, this pile of content you have may just house some pieces of gold, so it’s smart and cost-efficient to review the content you do have and get it up to scratch for your brand, before embarking on another content creation extravaganza.

And the first step towards doing that is to conduct a content audit.

What is a content audit?

For people used to dealing with words, the word ‘audit’ usually sparks mild-severe palpitations.

But a content audit can – and should – be a fun exercise to conduct.

Essentially, a content audit provides an objective look at the quality of your existing content, its alignment with your strategy and its performance.

It will also highlight how easily your content can be improved – or whether it’s just in everyone’s best interests to confine it to the great content dustbin in the sky so no-one ever has to clap eyes on it ever again.
